Nahel, 17, was killed driving a Mercedes on Tuesday morning in Nanterre, after refusing to comply. A video posted on social networks shows that one of the two police officers held him at gunpoint, then fired at point-blank range.

Emmanuel Macron estimated on Wednesday that the death of the teenager was an “unexplainable” and “inexcusable” act. “Nothing justifies the death of a young person”, affirmed the Head of State on the move to Marseille, evoking “the emotion of the entire Nation”. The police intervention was “obviously not in accordance with the rules,” said Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne.

Emmanuel Macron also wanted to support the police who “are committed to protecting us”, recalling that their functions were exercised “in an ethical framework”.

After a night of violence in Nanterreand in several cities in Île-de-France, the government on Wednesday launched calls for appeat, “in this very particular situation with very strong emotion”, insisted the government spokesperson, Olivier Véran, after the Council of Ministers.

A white march will be held this Thursday at 2 p.m. in front of the Nanterre prefecture.
