Rafael Benitez returns to Spain and lands on the Celta Vigo bench
The club have announced an agreement in principle which will lead to a three-year contract for the 63-year-old.
Rafa Benitez will sign a three-year contract as Celta Vigo coach, the Spanish Premier League club announced on Friday. The former Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid manager will replace Carlos Carvalhal who left Celta by mutual consent after saving the team from relegation last season (Celta finished 13th).
Celta Vigo, who will celebrate their centenary next season, said an agreement in principle had been reached with Benitez, 63, and that he will sign his contract in July. “For the centenary season, an unforgettable and unique event for the fans, Celta will have a formidable leader on the bench“Writes the Galician club in a press release.
Rafael Benitez won the 2005 Champions League with Liverpool, and two Spanish championships with Valencia in 2002 and 2004. His last team coached was Everton, from which he was sacked in January 2022. During his career he also managed the Inter Milan, Naples and Newcastle, in particular.
