Europeans: Jean-Luc Mélenchon judges “possible” an end to Nupes if the left divides

It puts pressure on the “dividers”. According to Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the end of the left alliance is “possible” if its four members (LFI, PS, EELV and CPF) each present lists to the Europeans, which will take place from June 6 to 9, 2024. This choice, favored by certain left-wing leaders, would then run the risk of an end to Nupes Allianceconcluded in May 2022, he believes in an interview with 20 minutes.

La Nupes is in danger though it’s not even an election deal anymore. If there is no union in the Europeans, there will not be any in the municipal elections either. Why would there be one in the presidential election? warns the leader of France Insoumise. “The small party interests have limits,” he warns, before recalling that LFI had offered environmentalists the head of the European list.

The leadership of the Greens, a party in which these elections have traditionally been successful, intends to propose an environmentalist list. The Socialists call for a debate in the fall. “I will defend Nupes as much as necessary,” ured Marine Tondelier, patroness of the Greens, on Wednesday. But the European “are a proportional ballot in one round, one of the only elections where you can vote as you want”.

“The dividers will be punished at the ballot box”

“Yes, we are different in Europe,” acknowledged Jean-Luc Mélenchon, himself a former MEP. But he called for relying on the “shared program” signed in the legislative framework. “Who can want to miss the opportunity to come out on top and to send an encouraging signal to all of Europe? Dividers will be punished at the ballot box,” he warned.

Behind his argument, the polls which in recent weeks place a possible single Nupes list neck and neck, even ahead of the National Rally or Renaissance in the Europeans.

But on the left, opponents of a single list do not fail to point out that the same polls predict that four separate leftist lists would ultimately send more MEPs than a single list, even if none could run for pole position.

A fourth presidential candidacy?

“I agree with a common candidacy in 2027”, however repeated Marine Tondelier this week. As to whether he “totally” ruled out running for the next presidential election, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, three times candidate and who finished third in 2022, replied “no one can say that. In all circumstances, I will play a role”.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon also denounced the emergence, in France, of a “bourgeois bloc which unifies the far right with all the traditional right, right up to the center”, as elsewhere in Europe: “Mr. today closer to Mr. Orban in Hungary that of Sanchez in Spain “, he lambasted, recalling the joint votes of Renaissance and of the RN “On all social and progressive measures”, such as the refusal of wealth tax, the increase in the minimum wage or the freezing of rents.
