Djokovic and the “respect” of speaking French
Asked at a press conference why he spoke French during each of his interviews on the court since his arrival in Paris, he mentioned the notion of respect.
As usual, the world number 3 replied in French when he was questioned hot after his victory against Varilas. “It’s a question of respect. I think it actually allows you to get closer to people, so they respect you more. It’s a kind of mutual respect. That’s how I see things. I have always been attracted to languages from an early age, and as I was educated in Germany, I learned German and English at school, then I learned Italian quite quickly. I also learned French and a little Spanish. So I think the more languages you speak, the more respect you’ll get, the more value you’ll get from dealing with people, just from your experience in a given country. I know it’s not the perfect level, but at least I think when you make an effort people recognize it. »
