LETTER “THE AWAKENING OF THE MACHINES” N°8 – Update on advances in artificial intelligence, and the debates it arouses.
“An AI-controlled US military drone killed its operator during a mock test. The artificial intelligence used highly unexpected strategies to achieve its mission and attacked anyone who interfered with it.” That is how THE Guardian like many Anglo-Saxon media, relayed the remarks made by Colonel Tucker Hamilton, head of “AI Test and Operations” of the US Air Force, at a conference held at the end of May in London. Only problem: the American military drone never killed its operator, in mission as in simulation. But the story was too good not to be contrived.
AI is scary and it sells. This week the magazine Time who up to now sided more with the techno-progressives, made the front page of its Asia edition on “The end of humanity“, red background and letters AI (for “artificial intelligence”) prominently.
