With a right on the offensive on immigration policy – which has been displaying its unity around the watchword since this weekend “stop m immigration” –, the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, compared, Wednesday, May 24, the Republican proposals for constitutional reform to “a migratory “Frexit””while inviting right-wing parliamentarians to continue to “to debate” of his reform.

The Republicans are expected to table two very strong immigration bills by the end of the week. Essential partner for a parliamentary compromise on the future text of the government, the party of Eric Ciotti is demanding by asking for a reform of the Constitution, which, in migration matters, would allow France to leave the European treaties.

“We have differences of principle on which, no doubt, we must debate. You propose for certain provisions to leave the Geneva Convention, to leave the treaties of the European Union, to leave the Council of Europe, to leave the ECHR… it is an important question that this migratory “Frexit” »said Mr. Darmanin in the Senate to a question from Senator Henri Leroy (LR).

“Possibility of derogating from the primacy of European treaties”

“Obviously we need to be able to discuss the constitutional proposals, but admit that here we are making an ordinary bill”he added.

“I have undertaken negotiations, discussions with the Republicans of the Senate group, with the centrists, with all the other groups who obviously wish to do so, to, I hope in the fall, discuss this text. Stop talking about it and start being concrete, as the government has proposed to you.he launched to the address of the senatorial majority, on the right.

LR intends to enshrine in the Constitution “the possibility of derogating from the primacy of the treaties and European law (…) when “the fundamental interests of the Nation” are at stake”, considering that immigration falls into this box. The right-wing party also intends “elevate the principle of imilation to constitutional status”.
