Data transfer: Meta receives a record fine
The Irish Cnil chose the week of the fifth anniversary of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) to impose a record fine on Meta.
The owner of Facebook is fined 1.2 billion euros for not having respected the rules of European art in the transfer of data to the United States.
In its decision published on Monday, the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) orders it to suspend its transatlantic data flows.
It gives him five months to “suspend any future transfer of personal data to the United States” and six months to stop “unlawful processing, including storage, in the United States” of transferred EU personal data.
Meta is accused of not having sufficiently protected the data of Europeans from the American security services.
