Humbert titled in Bordeaux after his victory against Etcheverry

Frenchman Ugo Humbert won the Bordeaux-Primrose 175 challenger tournament on clay on Saturday, overcoming Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry in two sets 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.

Humbert (50th in the world), who usually does not taste the ocher earth, pocketed a second tournament on this surface in a fortnight after his victory in early May at the Cagliari Challenger.

“I’m super happy to have won a title. It’s not every day and there two in two weeks, it’s not so bad, smiled the winner of the day. I had a great week, I still had a great final. I am proud of myself“.

Impressive throughout the tournament with significant victories over the Swiss Stan Wawrinka in the quarter-finals then over Richard Gasquet in the half, Humbert however started his final badly against the specialist Etcheverry (61st in the world), conceding his service at 2 games to 1.

Without panicking, the Lorrain returned to the score at 4 to 4 by putting his game in place before winning the decisive game thanks to a very good service (7-3).

The second set was better controlled by the one who will again become French number 1 on Monday. After a break made at 2-1, he did not hesitate to win on Gironde soil.

“I’m having a lot of fun again, that had never happened to me, especially on clay. I can’t say I don’t like (clay) anymore, that’s where I’ve scored the most points since the start of the season. I enjoy myself before Roland-Garros, it was a great preparation“, he concluded.
