Apple is playing it safe. To avoid any leakage of strategic information, the company asked in an internal memo to its employees – to which the ” wall street newspaper » has had access – not to use the OpenAI chatbot, ChatGPT . Other artificial intelligence tools are concerned, like Copilot deployed by Github (Microsoft), to facilitate software programming.
For Apple , the challenge is to protect the confidentiality of its future products. An element that is all the more sensitive since more than 10 years after the launch of Siri, the Apple brand is currently working on a generative AI technology similar to ChatGPT, notes the American daily.
Since ChatGPT’s model is continuously enriched, the conversations the bot has with its users are sent to OpenAI without distinction. At the risk, therefore, that certain data will be transmitted to Apple’s competitor by careless employees who would use the software to write lines of code, write e-mails, or even design marketing materials.
In line with Verizon, JP Morgan and Amazon
In an attempt to reure its users, OpenAI announced in April that it was now possible to deactivate the history of their conversations with ChatGPT, thus preventing OpenAI from using them to train its algorithm.
Because Apple is not the first company to take such measures. In recent months, for example, Verizon has banned its employees from using ChatGPT, believing that the tool weakens the ownership of its source code or customer information. The bank JP Morgan Chase made a similar choice, while Amazon reminded its engineers that they should favor its internal artificial intelligence tool.
