Wokism, Mélenchon, PCF label… The strategic choices of Fabien Roussel’s presidential campaign

It is a tiny part of the campaign expenses of the communist Fabien Roussel in the presidential election. A few hundred euros, validated by the National Commission for Campaign Accounts and Political Funding (CNCCFP). But the publication of these accounts reveals the questions of the candidate and his team. What to do about “wokism”how to stand out from the leader of La France insoumise (LFI) Jean-Luc Mélenchon, where to stick the“PCF label” old-fashioned scent?
So many questions posed to its communicators from the summer of 2021. Julia Castanier, in charge of internal communication, but also the service provider Jérémy Schlosser answer them, in several hitherto confidential notes that The world was able to consult. Interesting for what they say about the hesitations inherent in any campaign, and the choices made by the communist candidate, with a relative concern for the party line.
At the start of the campaign, in June 2021, a little worried about the controversial statements on the right to asylum by Fabien Roussel – on CNews in June 2021, he had declared about the refugees who had not obtained the right to asylum: “If they are not destined to stay on French soil, they are destined to leave and be accompanied home. » –, his communicators write: “This campaign still lacks the strong idea that will make it possible, on the one hand, to make each media appearance more profitable, and above all to emerge widely in public opinion. »
“Strategy of differentiation”
Seven months later, the deputy from the North will have found his “strong idea”even more than the “rustling”that is sure the defense of “good meat” which made the headlines, followed in the summer by barbecue defense. But at the time, nothing emerged yet and his advisers judged positively the “differentiation strategy” with the candidacy of Jean-Luc Mélenchon, all the more so since, according to them, “LFI is experiencing a drop in opinion and maintains an increasingly marked isolation with the rest of the political cl*** and the left”. Fabien Roussel’s advisers were clearly far from imagining the emergence of the New People’s Ecological and Social Union (Nupes) with Mr. Mélenchon at its head in the legislative elections.
In October 2021, they draw up a standard profile for the candidate to illustrate the concept of wokism: “20-year-old young woman, city student, rather from a privileged background, who wonders about her sexual orientation, her gender (…) vegetarian or even vegan ». The candidate has already positioned himself against these fights, they point out, pointing to the risk of “to cut oneself off from a (growing) part of the youth (this is already generally the case)”.
